Last Stop at the Longmeadow Train Station

On December 10, 1908 the New York & New Haven Railroad eliminated the Longmeadow Railroad Station from its list of regularly scheduled stops. The arrival of trollies that allowed people to travel from Springfield into Hartford and beyond significantly reduced the number of passengers using the train.

History of the Longmeadow Train Station

Railroad service through Longmeadow was started ~1844.  In 1884 a “second” Longmeadow Train Station (see above photo) was built to replace the original smaller original one.  The Longmeadow Station was located on the south side of the Depot Road (now Emerson Road) and Pondside Road intersection as shown in the 1894 map (see map below).

The last regulary scheduled stop in Longmeadow took place in 1908. In 1929 the building was purchased by the town for $1 and moved to its current location which is part of the former DPW offices on Pondside Road (see aerial photo below).

At the Annual Town Meeting on February 17, 1931 town voters “appropriated the sum of $3,500 for the remodeling of the old Station Building to adapt same for a caretaker’s quarters”. See the photo below of the completed “new” DPW facility that was published in the 1931 Annual Report.
